Sorcery of Scent on Permanent Hiatus

After more than 4 years and several hundred perfume-related articles, Sorcery of Scent is soon to be committed to the annals of perfume blogging history.

What started as a creative outlet for me in 2008 rapidly grew into something far greater than I had ever expected. In the years since its commencement, Sorcery of Scent has attracted over 4,000 site visitors a month and has amassed a finely-scented league of loyal readers... for that I am truly humbled, and feel incredibly blessed. To know that others felt there might have been some measure of merit in my indulgent rantings was an extraordinary gift for me. I have had the honour and privilege of your time, and that of some of the most respected perfumers in the industry, including my dear friends Vero Kern and Olivier Durbano. I thank each and every one of you!

Of course, authoring a perfume blog has not been without its challenges. Whilst the vast majority of people I've had the pleasure of interacting with through this medium have been incredibly friendly and supportive; I am somewhat taken aback at how competitive, envious and mean-spirited other 'perfume-lovers' and indeed, perfume bloggers can be. I ponder for a moment about what might have caused them to be this way, and I am utterly confounded... perhaps somewhere along the way their topnotes simply turned.

Fortunately, I sign off for the last time knowing I leave behind me a small legacy - a tiny cross-section of words and insights that are wholly my own, and ones that I hope might still serve to intrigue or inspire you. After all, perfume - as intimate and personal as it is - is simply nothing unless it is shared with someone else.

Warmly,
Dimitri

Very sad to hear this Dimi :o( ... Where am I to turn to now to fill the inevitable gap ?? ...
Sorry to hear too of all them competitive "mean-spirited" 'fume-bloggers about, (such a pity ! & so unnecessary too ! ~ Surely there's enough space for everybody, no !? ) ... Sure hope 'twas not "these pests" who hastened your decision to "retire" from "us" !?
~ I, for one at least (as I'm sure many others !), will definitely miss reading your wonderful 'fume blogg. So THANK YOU very much for these past years of wonderfully informative & insightful reviews.
(I shall be keeping my fingers crossed for your possible return at some future date hopefully :o).
Cheers for now !

Thanks for all the highly eloquent, erudite and simply enjoyable posts and insights, Dimi.
Now, without the downsides of blogging to have to contend with, you can go back to enjoying scent purely on a private level, and I'm sure you're looking very much forward to that.
Take care!
Michael

Very sad to read this Dimitri. I am sure it is not an easy decision for you. I hope this is a step forward for you and nothing to do with the "friendly" fellow bloggers. You do leave a legacy behind.

I'm sorry to see you go. I don't expect you to answer this, but why?

Good luck in what you do next.

Dimi,

Thank you for sharing your vast knowledge about perfume with all of us. I still have the hope that we will see you back somewhere on the web when you feel comfortable with that. I understand that perfume writing can turn into a big commitment, while other parts of life are more demanding of ones time.

Best of luck in your future endeavors, looking forward to reading your thoughts in the future.

Gosh, this makes me very sad to read this. Yes, one would think that there would be a natural and inherent reflection in the perfume blogosphere: that those writing about the beauty of perfumes would try to achieve a similar beauty of spirit, but sadly, that is not always the case. I hope that if you enjoy the writing, you eventually return to it. If not, go with the peace of knowing that you created something immensely lovely and worthwhile--and that there are people who appreciated you for it. I'm glad you will be keeping your blog online, as I'll be reading your archives.

What I wanted to say, has already been put so beautifully by Suzanne, I will refrain from repeating everything, but just say that I sincerely hope that it wasn't the nastiness of some bloggers which made you come to this sad conclusion, for then surely it would be even more important to be there and be heard as a writer of beauty and friendliness, and someone who believes sharing the good.
I will miss this wonderful blog immensely, and will, like many others hope to see you back some day.
Thank you

Many thanks, Dimitri. I will miss your vivid descriptions and insightful analysis. You have led me to many of my favorite fragrance obsessions - but I will not hold financial issues against you. Much luck to you in your other endeavors.
